Let’s Go to Roadhouse! No, Not That One

Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is never try – Homer Simpson

I was tired and hangry. My friends had just come into town and I had been holding off on eating so that we could all eat together. Two of them were here to get tattoos, so I knew that I was in for at least another 2 hour wait once they arrived. I originally wanted to eat at a restaurant close to the tattoo parlor, but as time passed, I knew that we were cutting it close on time. Instead, I had another friend pick a place that was opened past 11PM. That’s how we landed on College Roadhouse.

Royal Jelly: A Royal Surprise

Jim – [explaining to Dwight that he can’t be his Bestish Mensch] I just… really wish there was something I could do [Jim looks off into the distance].

Dwight – [turns around, surprised] – Michael. I can’t believe you came.

Michael – That’s what she said.

I love being surprised… the good way. It makes me feel a flurry of emotions in a very short span of time, and it reminds me that life is filled with unexpected twists and turns. It can be as simple as someone leaving a bag of chips on your desk for no reason, or as miraculous as a family member getting pregnant after years of trying (and trust me, I’m speaking from experience here). But a FOOD surprise? That’s rare. In fact, the older you get, and the more your palette develops, the less likely your jaw will drop from a new food experience. Here, I even took the time to graph it:  Continue reading

It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas… at the Circuit

Christmas is awesome. First of all, you get to spend time with people you love. Secondly, you can get drunk and no one can say anything… Not bad for one day. It’s really the greatest day of all time – Michael Scott

Christmas is hands down my favorite time of the year. I get to whip out my fancy winter clothes, eat s’mores, slurp ramen, and spend time with friends and family. So naturally, around this time of year, I’m constantly trying to plan things to do that are Christmas-y. Up until now, the Trail of Lights at Zilker has been one of the most iconic Austin things you could do in December. But starting this year, another potential classic has appeared: Winter Wonderland at the Circuit. Continue reading

Quattro Gatti: ‘A’ For Effort

Joey – Here it is – our last pizzas together as roommates.
Chandler – I wish I’d known you were going to do that. I ordered Chinese.
Joey – Oh, well, that’s okay. Hey, actually, in a way it’s kinda nice. You know, our last dinner together. Me, bringing the food of my ancestors; you, the food of yours.

Oh Quattro Gatti, I had such high hopes for you. After all, when a restaurant has 3.5 to 4 stars on Yelp and over 200 reviews, you can’t blame someone for having expectations. Natasha (you may remember her from the Russell’s Bistro article) recommended a whole slew of authentic and tasty Italian restaurants to try, so after I checked out the Quattro Gatti menu online and read some Yelp reviews, my curiosity piqued, and I decided that I should give it a try.  Continue reading

Nutrition Lesson One – A Broad Overview

Don’t run off and get a pastrami sandwich or something, that’d be bad. Cheeseburger, bad. Fries, bad. Shakes, bad. Coca-Cola: woops, I said it! – Tony Horton, during the P90X Plyo workout

Unless you’re a five year old reading this, then you’re probably at an age where you’ve aligned yourself with one of the following lifestyles or approaches to nutrition:

I. Eat healthy, work out a lot. No ‘cheat days’ allowed

II. I should probably eat healthy, and work out a lot… starting tomorrow

III. Eat healthy and work out most days. Cheat every once and a while as a reward

IV. I’m happy with who I am, and I’m just doing to do whatever I feel like doing

You might read the fourth one and think that it’s the laziest option, but if you’re not already deeply entrenched in the first option, I’d like to explain why I believe doing what you feel like doing is the smartest way to go about being a foodie who can eat whatever, whenever.  Continue reading

24 Diner: Would You Like More Toast With That Jam?

If you think what I’m doing is weird, don’t. I’m just tearing my toast into smaller pieces so that I can achieve the optimal bread to jam ratio – Jessica, today’s guest

If you’re an Austin native, and you love breakfast for dinner just like me, then you probably know all about 24 Diner and have formed your own opinion of it already. So no, I’m not just going to sit here and tell you to go eat there. Instead, I’m going to sit here and tell you to go try their incredibly yummy jams. Continue reading

ATX Spotlight: Mueller Lake Park

I want it to be a perfect park with a state-of-the-art swing set and basketball courts, and off to the side a lovely sitting area for kids with asthma to watch other kids play. – Leslie Knope

Wow. If I’d had a park like that when I was growing up, I probably wouldn’t have gone through such a prolonged mall-slut phase. – Tammy Swanson

What, ATXFoodies, are you drunk? Why are you posting something about a local park in a food blog? Well, maybe because as foodies, it is our duty to go out, be active, and make sure that we don’t become completely useless sacks of potatoes. We need to have sustainable lifestyles so that we can eat as much food as possible before we die. Besides, you need some suggestions for things to do in between your meals at nearby restaurants, so let’s kick it off with Mueller Lake Park! Continue reading
